DanceAfrica Workshops and Classes

Experience the profundity and excitement of African culture, art, and history in classes and workshops designed for DanceAfrica to teach fundamentals of Cameroonian movement and music. Children and caregivers can participate in indoor and outdoor events led by expert artists. And acclaimed dancer, choreographer, and teacher Pat Hall leads an inclusive, interactive class for persons with or without disabilities, in person or through livestream.

        Registration is required to attend this event. A limited number of spaces are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Registration will be available starting May 1.

        Families deepen their engagement with DanceAfrica in this fun-filled, outdoor workshop, led by BAM teaching artist and performance art education scholar, Dánice Jones, learning rhythms and movement from Cameroon.

        All ages.

        About Dánice Jones: Pioneering dance therapist Dánice Jones has collaborated with BAM for more than three decades as a percussionist, movement researcher, and cultural arts educator, bringing unique cultural experiences to the community.

        DanceAfrica invites families to explore the fundamentals of Cameroonian dance movement and music in this fun-filled, hands-on workshop.

Choose to participate in person at the Mark Morris Dance Center or through livestream, and discover how dance forms from Cameroon celebrate community and aspects of daily life, providing a unique window into the culture, history, and traditions of its people.

        About Pat Hall: Pat Hall is an internationally acclaimed dancer, choreographer, and teacher whose style is influenced by African, Caribbean, and contemporary American dance, and by ceremonial and ritual practices of indigenous peoples.

        Join Jahanna Blunt, recipient of the Chuck Davis Emerging Choreographer Fellowship, as she engages with the BAM community during DanceAfrica 2024. This hour-long workshop will center Koredjuga, a rhythm that originated in the border region of Mali and Guinea, traditionally used to accompany itinerant jesters who disrupt and entertain during social functions. Participation is open to all dance levels and observers.
