Frantz Fanon: Black Skin, White Mask (1997)
Dir. Isaac Julien, 70min
With Colin Salmon, Stuart Hall, Olivier Fanon

“O my body, make of me always a man who questions!” Multimedia visionary Isaac Julien crafts a dreamily poetic journey through Frantz Fanon’s life and ideas. Interweaving strikingly staged reenactments, archival footage, and interviews with family members and scholars (including Stuart Hall), Julien crafts a richly textured audiovisual experience and probing exploration of Fanon’s thoughts on colonialism, Black alienation, and the struggle for liberation.
Nucleus of the Great Union (2018)
Dir. The Otolith Group, 32min

In 1953, Richard Wright spent ten weeks with West Africa’s first mass socialist party as it campaigned for independence from British rule. He published his reflections on existential alienation and racial belonging from that time in Black Power: A Record of Reactions in a Land of Pathos, but of the over 1,500 photos he took on the journey, only 34 were published. This avant-garde short reimagines the digital afterlives of these images by plotting the trajectories of their movement through networks of Black internationalism. Photographs are treated as actors and extras in a world where images are both evidence and exploration, encounter and expressionism.
