La Chinoise (1967)
Dir. Jean-Luc Godard, 96min, DCP
With Anne Wiazemsky, Jean-Pierre Léaud, Juliet Berto
In French with English subtitles

After studying Chinese communism in school, a group of middle-class students form a small Maoist cell and debate the necessity of using terrorism and violence to ignite revolution. This pop-art film directed by Jean-Luc Godard brilliantly captures and satirizes the revolutionary energy of Paris in 1967.

Communists Like Us (2010)
Dir. The Otolith Group, 23min
In English and French with English subtitles

Exploring a 16-minute scene from Jean Luc Godard’s 1967 La Chinoise, this short by the Otolith Group repurposes dialogue from Godard’s scene, transcribed onto archival photographs of political encounters across Asia. Creating a conversation between photography and cinema, the short’s varied sources and engagements with Maoism are brought into dialogue with each other.
