In 1969, the first Pan-African Cultural Festival was held in Algiers, celebrating the cultures of Africa while also acknowledging hopes and struggles for independence across the continent. Four decades later, in July 2009, the second Pan-African Cultural Festival returned to the streets of Algiers, heralding what it called the African Renaissance.
