In Conversation with Jean-Pierre Dikongué-Pipa

Sat, May 25, 2024

Rain or Shine!

    Part of
  • FilmAfrica
  • and
  • DanceAfrica Festival 2024

Join us for an in-depth conversation with a pioneer of African cinema, Cameroonian director and writer Jean-Pierre Dikongué-Pipa, presented as part of this year’s FilmAfrica series. Born in 1940 in Douala, Dikongué-Pipa came to film from theater, and studied at the Cinema Conservatory in Paris. After making a series of shorts (1965—66), he directed Cameroon's first full-length feature film, Muna Moto (1974), selected for preservation by the Film Foundation’s World Cinema Project. Dikongué-Pipa’s films deal with relationships between elements of traditional culture and the wider world, and have helped to bring Cameroonian cinema to global audiences. Also active as an author, playwright, and theater producer, he has directed and acted in around 30 plays throughout his distinguished career.
