Gentle Creatures: Robert Bresson and Mani Kaul

Programmed by Nick Newman

In a one-night-only double header, two disparate master filmmakers present adaptations of a short story by the great Russian author Fyodor Dostoevsky. Written in 1876 and inspired by a news story, “A Gentle Creature” (also known as “The Meek One”) recounts the tragedy of a woman driven to suicide by her domineering husband. Working in color for the first time, the great French director Robert Bresson moves the setting from 19th century St. Petersburg to modern-day Paris in Une femme douce, with Dominique Sanda (Il Giardino dei Finzi-Contini, The Conformist) in the titular role. Playing that same role in Nazar, a 1991 adaptation by Mani Kaul set in Mumbai, is Shambhavi Kaul, the celebrated Indian director’s daughter.
