The Last Temptation of Christ

Nov 17—Nov 21, 2024
    Part of
  • OUTRAGE: Movies and the Culture Wars, 1987–1996
  • and
  • BAM Film 2024
Directed by Martin Scorsese (1988)
With Willem Dafoe, Harvey Keitel, Paul Greco, Steve Shill, Verna Bloom, Barbara Hershey

The Scorsese film that triggered a deadly terror attack in Paris as well as protests, boycotts, and outright bans across the globe stars Willem Dafoe as Jesus Christ, who is gradually coming to accept his divinity and the inexorability of his ultimate fate. Condemned by Christians everywhere for a scene in which Jesus and Mary Magdalene (Hershey) have sex, this screen adaptation of Nikos Kazantzakis's novel divided critics and audiences alike with its depiction of the life of Christ—deemed raw and fascinating by some, and total blasphemy by others.
