Archangel

Nov 1—Nov 6, 2024
    Part of
  • “Silent” Films
  • and
  • BAM Film 2024
Directed by Guy Maddin (1990)
With Michael Gottli, David Falkenburg, Michael O'Sullivan

Modeled after the “part-talkies” of the late 1920s, this weird, wild, and extraordinary work perfectly exemplifies Canadian director Guy Maddin’s (Careful, My Winnipeg) fascination with silent-era cinema. The action is set in 1919, when a one-legged allied trooper arrives in the snow-covered Russian region of Archangel during a short-lived moment of Canadian intervention in Russia's civil war. What ensues is a cornucopia of silent-era melodrama and deadpan comedy about obsessive love and infatuation, newly restored in beautiful 4K.
