Popeye

Jul 7—Jul 9, 2024
    Part of
  • Two Women: Early Films of Sissy Spacek and Shelley Duval
  • and
  • BAM Film 2024
Directed by Robert Altman (1980)
With Shelley Duvall, Robin Williams, Ray Walston

Robert Altman brought his characteristically offbeat sensibility to this live-action take on the iconic comic strip, featuring spot-on performances by Robin Williams as the brawny sailorman and Shelley Duval seemingly born for the role of his lithe lady love, Olive Oyl, as well as seamlessly integrated songs by Harry Nilsson. Though its kooky brilliance went largely unappreciated at the time, it’s far from a blight on the esteemed director’s filmography; it’s now quintessential Altman.
