Alfreda’s Cinema presents BY ANY MEANZ SONICALLY

Alfreda’s Cinema with BAM kicks off 2025 with composer, producer, songwriter, and founder of Never Normal Records Suzi Analogue’s live electronics performance, BY ANY MEANZ SONICALLY.

Directed by JONES, with an original composition by Suzi Analogue, archival research by Emmy Parker, and performance technical direction by Compton Timberwolf, this visual montage highlights the profound influence of Black women in electronic dance music, tracing their impact from the early roots in jazz and rhythm & blues to the global prominence of dance music today, all set to Suzi's electronic score.

The performance delves into the rich history and contemporary relevance of Black women in this genre, whose innovations and voices have shaped the soundscape of electronic music. From trailblazers like Betty Davis and Sister Sledge, whose early experiments with electronic sounds influenced pop and funk, to more recent visionaries like Janelle Monáe, Missy Elliott, and Analogue herself, the performance explores their artistic legacies and the cultural power of their music.

Analogue’s live synth score weaves together a narrative of resilience, creativity, and empowerment through dynamic synthesis and layered beats. The rich textures and rhythms she creates are both an homage to and extension of the legacies of those who paved the way, from the Afro-futurist soundscapes of artists like Sylvia Robinson to the avant-garde and spiritual experimentation of Alice Coltrane.

BY ANY MEANZ SONICALLY is not just a celebration of music; it’s a celebration of identity, of the intersections between race, gender, and genre, and of the unwavering contributions of Black women who continue to redefine the boundaries of music and culture. In this performance, Suzi Analogue offers both a sonic tribute and a space for reflection on how these women have reshaped electronic music and continue to influence the sounds of tomorrow.

The live score is an unforgettable sonic journey, bringing audiences into an intimate, high-energy space where film music, history, and innovation collide in bold new ways.

Featuring a Q&A with Grammy-nominated songwriter and producer Yvonne Turner!
