Directed by Hung-i Yao (2011)
In this documentary, director Hung-i Yao turns his lens to one of China’s best-known figurative painters—Liu Xiaodong—as he makes a solemn return to his hometown of Jincheng in North-East China. There, he has a nostalgic goal: to re-paint his community nearly thirty years after he left at the young age of 17. Through its unfiltered portrayal of Liu’s practice, the unadorned doc serves as a portrait of an artist’s ability, and a love letter to the community that shaped him.
