“My first film with director Bi Gan. It was his feature debut—an overnight sensation that won numerous international awards and established him as a major director. The natural environment in Kaili, Guizhou felt very similar to Taiwan's humidity, and the sound of the Miao people's lusheng (bamboo reed pipe) felt as mysterious as a dream.”

Kaili Blues
Sep 21 & 22, 2026
Directed by Bi Gan (2015)
With
Chen Yongzhong, Daqing Zhao, Feiyang Luo, Xie Lixun
Chen Sheng, an ex-convict turned doctor in the rural community of Kaili, sets out for Zhenyuan to find his nephew, neglected by a careless half brother. There he encounters fragments of his past and present in a tapestry of melancholy and jubilation. In a striking directorial debut, Bi Gan examines ordinary life, extracting magnificent performances from a cast of mostly non-professional actors, including his uncle (and former gangster) Chen Yongzhong.
