In feudal Japan, two women are violently murdered by soldiers during a civil war, their bodies tossed aside and pawed at by a black cat. Their deaths spur something ominous: samurai returning from the war found with their throats torn out. The governor tasks a samurai with investigating the macabre murders, leading him down a mystifying path towards the otherworldly entity responsible. Desire, grief, and vengeance collide in Kaneto Shindō’s (Onibaba, The Naked Island) atmospheric supernatural thriller, where the boundaries between the living and the dead begin to blur. Shot in striking black and white, Kuroneko turns its shadowy forests and moonlit interiors into an eerie world of beauty and menace.
