Based on a chapter from Lillian Hellman's 1973 autobiographical work Pentimento, Zinnemann’s political drama traces the stories of two women and the intersections of their lives before and during the Nazi era. The film, a tribute to a memory of Hellman’s childhood friend Julia (Redgrave), recounts the occasion of Julia’s request that Hellmen herself (Fonda) undertake a dangerous mission in service of the fight against Naziism.
