Sheep in the Box

In the near future, grieving couple Otone (Haruka Ayase) and Kensuke (Daigo Yamamoto) bring into their lives an artificial child identical to the son they lost. Japanese writer and director Hirokazu Kore-eda (Shoplifters, Monster) shows his signature restraint in this poignant meditation on loss, grief, and healing, screened in its world premiere at the main competition of the 2026 Cannes Film Festival in May. According to Deadline Hollywood Daily, “Kore-eda has taken the stuff of dystopian cyberpunk nightmares and turned it into an elegant, wistful fairytale.”
