Out in the blistering Brazilian sertão, the tiny town of Bacurau has bigger problems than heat, water shortages, and a mayor who treats his constituents like garbage. After their beloved matriarch dies, the villagers discover their home has vanished from the map… and yet some very strange and vaguely threatening tourists have descended upon the town-that-was. What starts as a sun-baked mystery curdles into a blood-soaked saga of colonialism and its consequences, class warfare, and collective revenge. Kleber Mendonça Filho (Neighboring Sounds, Aquarius) delivers a daring work of sociopolitical commentary, winning the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival, in this gloriously weird genre mash-up that serves as a critique of contemporary Brazilian society.
