Directed by Robert M. Young (1982)
With
Edward James Olmos, Victoria Plata, James Gammon, Tom Bower
Adapted from Americo Paredes’ With His Pistol in His Hand, Robert M. Young’s The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez dramatizes the real-life case of Cortez (Edward James Olmos), a Mexican American farmer who became a folk hero after killing an abusive Texas Ranger in self-defense in 1901. With this lyrical yet unsentimental film, Young and his Chicano collaborators put a human face to a widely misunderstood chapter in Texas history. The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez is conversant with the corrido tradition that gives it structure, but also with the stale frontier tropes it challenges, resulting in a work of revisionism and reportage.
