Multidisciplinary artist Laurie Anderson—one of America’s most renowned and daring creative pioneers—returns to BAM with an unforgettable collaboration with the jazz band Sexmob. Visually breathtaking and sonically spectacular, this one-of-a-kind performance showcases Anderson’s pioneering technological innovations and offers a glimpse into her singular sensory world. Together with the members of Sexmob—Steven Bernstein (horns), Briggan Krauss (saxophone, guitar), Tony Scherr (bass), Kenny Wollesen (percussion), and Doug Wieselman (guitar and woodwinds)—Anderson performs songs from throughout her career in new interpretations.

        Laurie Anderson
        Laurie Anderson is a writer, director, composer, visual artist, musician, and vocalist who has created groundbreaking works that span the worlds of art, theater, experimental music, and technology. Her recording career first ignited in 1981 with the song “O Superman.” Her live performances range from intimate spoken word shows to expansive multimedia performances like United States (1982), Empty Places (1990), and Delusion (2010).

        Anderson’s creative repertoire extends to audio-visual installations and films such as Home of the Brave (1986) and the acclaimed Heart of a Dog (2015). As a performer and musician, she’s collaborated with luminaries including Brian Eno, Philip Glass, and Jean-Michel Jarre. As a composer, Anderson has contributed music to films by Wim Wenders and Jonathan Demme; dance pieces by Bill T. Jones, Trisha Brown, and Molissa Fenley; and theater productions, including plays by Robert LePage.

        A published author of ten books and a five-time Grammy nominee, Anderson’s impact on every corner of the creative landscape is undeniable. Her vast art exhibitions—including retrospectives in France and Brazil—include the monumental exhibition The Weather, shown at the Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum in 2021 and 2022. Her visual work is on long term display at MASS MoCA.

        From 1992 onward, Lou Reed was her life partner and collaborator. They married in 2008 and worked on numerous projects together until his death in 2013. Anderson lives in New York City.
