Terror 2000—Intensivstation Deutschland

Tue, Oct 22, 2024
    Part of
  • The Baffler Presents: Facing the Future
  • and
  • BAM Film 2024
Directed by Christoph Schlingensief (1992)
With Margit Carstensen, Peter Kern, Udo Kier

Performance artist, filmmaker, and all-around mischief-maker Christoph Schlingensief rose to international prominence with his “German Trilogy,” which satirized his home country’s insistence that it successfully turned the page on its Nazi past after World War II. Terror 2000 engages with xenophobia towards Eastern Bloc refugees around German reunification. Schlingensief embraces the style of hardcore schlock to tell this story, using ugly tropes to put revanchist bloodlust to the test. Grand Guignol in the extreme, the film is not for the faint of heart, but provides a fascinating counter to the somber New German Cinema of Schlondorff and Kluge.
