    Part of
  • The Baffler Presents: Facing the Future
  • and
  • BAM Film 2024
Directed by Alex Rivera (2008)
With

Leonor Varela, Jacob Vargas, Luis Fernando Peña

In a near future where Mexicans remotely operate robot laborers across state lines while living in poverty at home, Memo Cruz (Peña) labors in tandem as a hacker. After drones attack his home, Memo flees to Tijuana, where he meets a beautiful student named Luz (Varela) who sells her memories online. Still singular among filmmaker debuts in the history of independent cinema, Alex Rivera’s cyberpunk thriller punches heroically above the weight of its limited budget, eerily on-point in its depiction of tech surveillance and corporate hegemony, as well as the privatization of natural resources and climate catastrophe.
