I, Robot

    Part of
  • The Baffler Presents: Facing the Future
  • and
  • BAM Film 2024
Directed by Alex Proyas (2004)
With

Will Smith, Bridget Moynahan, Alan Tudyk, James Cromwell, Bruce Greenwood, Shia LaBeouf, Chi McBride, Jerry Wasserman, Peter Shinkoda

In 2030s Chicago, private detective Del Spooner (Smith) is embroiled in a search to get to the bottom of a robotics company CEO’s mysterious suicide. Alex Proyas (Dark City, The Crow) struggled against the studio to make this sci-fi blockbuster, loosely tethered to ideas from the eponymous novel by Isaac Asimov. What I, Robot lacks in fidelity to Asimov (or narrative sophistication), it makes up for with 2000s CGI spectacle, envisioning a society where humankind has shifted its dependency onto slave automatons uncannily similar to the ones in Chris Cunningham’s video for “All is Full of Love” by Bjork.

Featuring an introduction by series programmer Steve Macfarlane
