Gattaca

Sun, Oct 20, 2024
    Part of
  • The Baffler Presents: Facing the Future
  • and
  • BAM Film 2024
Directed by Andrew Niccol (1997)
With Ethan Hawke, Uma Thurman, Jude Law, Alan Arkin, Loren Dean, Gore Vidal, Tony Shalhoub, Ernest Borgnine, Blair Underwood

In a near-future where eugenics has become the norm, an aspiring astronaut named Vincent (Hawke) is stuck on earth due to the supposed inferiority of his genes. With the help of a “DNA broker” he assumes the identity of a paralyzed athlete (Law) in a bid to join the Gattaca Space Program. But unwanted attention follows, as does a romance with a coworker (Thurman). Andrew Niccol’s feature debut stands out as a Hollywood sci fi thriller of rare intelligence and poetry, having lost little of its power to provoke debate (and discomfort) over the last three decades.
