Sylvia Scarlett

    Part of
  • Passing You By: Impostorism on Film
  • and
  • BAM Film 2024
Directed by George Cukor (1935)
With Katharine Hepburn, Edmund Gwenn, Cary Grant

Katharine Hepburn plays Sylvia Scarlett, a young English woman who passes as a boy to sneak her crooked father (Gwenn) from Marseille to London. A notorious flop that began Hepburn’s stint as so-called “box-office poison,” this first pairing of Hepburn and Cary Grant is now regarded as far ahead of its time in its depictions of gender and sexuality.
