Passing You By: Impostorism on Film

Aug 9—Aug 15, 2024
    Part of
  • BAM Film 2024

Programmed by Jessica Green

Social mobility, deception, performative strategies, and self-invention are themes global cinema has explored from its inception. Passing—pretending to be part of a group other than one’s own, and being recognized as such—has perennially popped up as something movie protagonists do in pursuit of ascension, acceptance, or simply to defy oppressive social norms and codes. At the same time, our contemporary shared definitions of identity are fluid and rooted in shifting language, leaving the very notion of passing up for debate and interpretation. Intended as an open-ended inquiry, this series explores instances of passing for another race, class, gender, sexuality, ethnicity, nationality, or religion—or even passing for human.
