Sympathy

    Part of
  • Passing You By: Impostorism on Film
  • and
  • BAM Film 2024
Directed by Andy Amenechi (2004)
With Liz Benson, Nkeiru Slyvanus, Shola Fashodu, Genevieve Nnaji

In this Nollywood folk horror family melodrama, Jennifer (Slyvanus), an ogbanje (evil spirit child), passes for human. The literal meaning of ogbanje, in the Igbo language, is children who come and go—evil, childlike spirits who die and then are reborn again to torture their parents with sorrow. In Sympathy, Jennifer makes a defiant choice, despite the continued protests from her coven of menacing ogbanje sisters. Digitally transferred from VHS.
