  • The Boom Is Really An Echo: Selections from the Pearl Bowser Media Collection

From a talent show to political documentary to footage of protest rallies, these films show the “boom” of independent Black filmmakers in Brooklyn in the 60s and 70s, echoing back to the urgent work decades before by towering figures Oscar Michaux and Paul Robeson.

Featuring screenings of Statues Hardly Ever Smile (Stan Lathan), It's the Same Old Game (Charles Hobson), Jazz Karate, and Kindred Spirits (Timon Lyander).

Join us after the program for a panel discussion with Jimmie Mannas, Lebert "Sandy" Bethune, Sylvester Bracey Jr., Timon Lyander, and J.T. Takagi, moderated by Ina Archer.
