Composed of footage shot over 22 years, Jia Zhang-ke’s Caught by the Tides is a stylistic departure for the filmmaker, invoking impressionistic vignettes and a non-linear melding of fiction and reality. A working class woman (Zhao Tao) sets out to find her lover of years past, after time and circumstance thrust them apart. Moody and unsentimental, the experimental romance serves as dedication to the passage of time, and exploration of how it ebbs and flows with love.
