After Édouard Saroyan learns that his illustrious career as a concert artist is the result of his wife sleeping with a top talent agent, he assumes a new identity as saloon pianist Charlie Koller—and proceeds to stumble though the criminal underworld and a new love affair in François Truffaut’s playful homage to American film noir. The iconic French singer and actor Charles Aznavour triumphs in a role Truffaut created just for him, delivering a performance hailed by Martin Scorsese as a major influence.
