The Face Behind the Mask

Sep 15—Sep 16, 2024
    Part of
  • I'm Not Myself Today: Films that Inspired A Different Man"
  • and
  • BAM Film 2024
Directed by Robert Florey (1941)
With Peter Lorre, Evelyn Keyes, Don Beddoe, George E. Stone, John Tyrrell, Cy Schindell, Stanley Brown, James Seay, Warren Ashe

Versatile screen icon Peter Lorre (M, The Maltese Falcon, Casablanca) portrays Janos Szabo, a kindly Hungarian watchmaker who comes to America in search of a new life. Horribly scarred in a hotel fire on the day of his arrival, Szabo is unable to find employment, and turns to crime to support himself. Written specifically for Lorre and directed by Robert Florey (The Cocoanuts, Murders in the Rue Morgue), The Face Behind the Mask was poorly received at release, but earned a solid reputation for its premise and performances.
