With
Joaquin Phoenix, Josh Brolin, Owen Wilson, Katherine Waterston, Reese Witherspoon, Benicio del Toro, Joanna Newsom
The second Paul Thomas Anderson adaptation of a Pynchon novel (The Master was loosely inspired by V) follows Larry "Doc" Sportello (Phoenix), a bungling private investigator fumbling through the criminal underworld of 1970 Los Angeles. Arguably the most quintessential presentation of Pynchon put to film tonally, the narration—as read by the musician Joanna Newsom—pulls some of the novel’s text verbatim.
